What I Learned This Week

On Saturday night Craig and I had a stay in date.  After a Fondue supper (stay tuned for a post on that later in the week) we curled up in front of our movie screen ( we have a projector in the basement) and watched Food Inc.  I have never been so thankful to have grass fed hormone free beef and free range chicken in my freezer than while watching that film.

What I Learned:
  • Corn fed cows are causing a lot of terrible consequences to our food quality including increased amounts of E.coli  bacteria.
  • Chickens are being raised in the dark so they are lethargic and are easier to catch.  They are being grown so fast that their legs can not support them and their organs are failing.
  • The animals being farmed (if you can call it that) are packed full of antibiotics.
  • Hamburger filler is being rinsed with ammonia to try and stop E.Coli.
  • There are pattens on seeds so that farmers can not even save their own seeds from their crops to plant the next year.
This business is bad for the environment, the workers, the people who eat the food and the animals being raised for slaughter. If you have not seen Food Inc.  I encourage you to check it out.

I've heard a few people talking about Food Inc. It's really sad what they are doing to our food supply!

Thanks for sharing about the movie. I have wanted to see it. I know we could do better, but I am thankful for what we do grow ourselves.

My husband and I love our stay at home date nights when we make time to watch a movie together in our basement on the projector. Cheap but fun dates. :-)

After seeing this movie I was completely disturbed...to the point that I was really questioning our whole diet as a family. I mean, according to that movie even vegetables are potentially hazardous?! After a few days I realized that there are two sides to every story and the absolute truth about things is usually somewhere in the middle. But it was disturbing nonetheless.

More people need to know this. Coming from a family of farmers, (who gave up farming) this information is not new to me, there is so much that the general public doesn't know about the food they eat. Thank you for taking the time to share this!

I watched it too. It is horrible to see what we have let happen in the food industry. Farming didn't look like that when I was a kid on a hog ranch!

That's exactly how I felt when I watched this movie. You summed up the key points quite succinctly. I'm impressed! :-) (Succinct is not my strong suite.)
