Motivate Me Monday - Can You Just Be Friends?

Fifth Street Palace
It's a slow fade when you give yourself away
It's a slow fade when black and white have turned to gray
Thoughts invade, choices are made, a price will be paid
When you give yourself away
People never crumble in a day
It's a slow fade, it's a slow fade
(Slow Fade ~Casting Crowns)

I am going to come right out with it and tell you, I do not believe, if you are married, that it is wise to be friends with the opposite sex unless they are your siblings.  I realize there will be some disagreement with that statement and that is ok.  I hope you will read on however.

Now I am not talking about being friends with couples who you invite to dinner and play monopoly with every Friday night.  I am talking about intimate relationships.  The sort where you call your friend just to chat, the kind of friend you go out for coffee with just the 2 of you, the friend you call in a crisis should be the same gender as you.

Here's why.  Rarely do you set out to sin.  You might even look at your friend and think "Romance? Not in a million years."

But there is one who is out there.  One who can subtly pull at your heartstrings. One who can influence your thoughts and feelings.

Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 1 Peter5:8

There it is!  Do not let Satan get a foothold in your life, in your marriage.

Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life. Proverbs 4:23

I agree; there's just too much risk there, too much temptation that Satan can hold over us. Thanks for this post, Sarah.

I agree with you 100%. You can't give Satan ANYTHING to tempt you or lead you away.
Great post my friend. Tell it girl!!!

So very true. I completely agree. I had a friend, whom I was friends with long before I was married, and though our friendship lasted after being married, it became too hard. I eventually had to end it. Romance wasn't even a thought, until my husband and I were having troubles and I found solace in this friends conversations (thankfully there is considerable distance between us). I was open and honest with him and he was very respectful in my decision. Temptation really could have gotten the best of us, because Satan was hard at work, but fortunately God is bigger and through it all He was ultimately glorified. I don't so much mind losing a buddy when I know it's the Lord's will.
Blessings,

Well put Sarah. I completely agree...too much can happen too quickly before you even know it has begun.

I used to have a few guy friends that I hung out with before I met my husband. Now the only guy friends we have are couple friends and church friends. The only men I share things with are my husband, brother and father. Thanks for the reminder, Sarah.

Sarah I totally agree with you, and thankful I have a husband who feels the same way. We have some very close friends that we hang out with as couples, but you will never find us alone with the others spouse, just because you never know what satan has instore for you. We must protect our marriages!!! Great Post!
